Zee Entertainment Enterprises is set to seek a broader undertaking from Nykaa in the Delhi High Court to prevent any future copyright violations, while continuing to pursue its ₹2 crore damages claim, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The lawsuit, filed on April 3, alleges that Nykaa used Zee-owned music in promotional Instagram reels in violation of copyright law and licensing terms governing music usage on Meta platforms.

Nykaa has informed the court that the 12 reels identified in the complaint have already been taken down.

However, Zee has expressed dissatisfaction with the current scope of the undertaking recorded by the court, which is limited to the removal of those specific reels. The company argues that such a narrow commitment does not sufficiently safeguard its rights.

Zee is expected to request that the court direct Nykaa to provide a broader assurance—covering its entire music catalogue—ensuring that no content is used without proper authorisation in the future.

According to sources, Zee is concerned that a reel-specific undertaking leaves room for potential repeat violations. The broadcaster has highlighted the risk of further unauthorised use of its songs in promotional content unless stronger safeguards are put in place.

Alongside seeking expanded protection, Zee continues to press for ₹2 crore in damages, claiming that the alleged unauthorised use of its music has caused commercial harm.

Nykaa, for its part, has not admitted any wrongdoing and has relied on compliance through the removal of the flagged content.

The matter is scheduled to be heard next on May 26, with the outcome expected to have implications for how brands use copyrighted music in social media promotions.
