Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has sparked widespread discussion after urging Indians living in the United States to consider returning home and contributing to India’s long-term growth. His message, shared as an open letter, reflects on changing global dynamics and the role of skilled professionals in shaping India’s future.

Drawing from his own experience of moving to the US decades ago, Vembu acknowledged the opportunities the country once offered to Indian professionals. At the same time, he pointed to shifting narratives around immigration and employment that, in his view, are creating increasing uncertainty for foreign talent.

In his message, Vembu suggested that global perception of Indians is closely linked to India’s economic and technological progress. He argued that respect on the world stage is ultimately tied to a nation’s strength in innovation, infrastructure and capability building.

He encouraged professionals who have built careers abroad to bring their expertise back to India, highlighting the country’s growing potential and its large, young population. According to him, experienced talent can play a key role in guiding the next generation and accelerating development across sectors.

The statement has gained attention at a time when discussions around global mobility, talent migration and economic positioning are intensifying. Recent political remarks in the United States regarding immigration have further amplified these conversations, drawing responses from policymakers and public figures.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs also addressed recent comments made by US leadership, describing them as inappropriate and not reflective of the broader relationship between the two countries.

Vembu’s call adds to an ongoing debate about brain drain versus reverse migration. As India continues to expand its technology ecosystem and digital economy, the question of whether global Indian talent will return — and at what scale — remains a key issue for the country’s growth trajectory.
